On the morning of October 27, in Hanoi, under the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Agriculture and Environment Newspaper, the Department of Climate Change, and the Vietnam Petroleum Institute organized the Workshop "Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Technology: Solutions to Promote Net Zero in Vietnam".

The workshop was attended by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Le Trong Yen, along with representatives of regulatory agencies, experts, scientists, research organizations, and domestic and international enterprises.

In the context of Vietnam making efforts to implement its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology is considered one of the potential solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially for hard-to-abate industrial sectors such as thermal power, cement, steel, oil and gas, and chemicals.

However, bringing CCUS into practical application still poses many issues regarding technology, investment costs, infrastructure, policy mechanisms, and the ability to mobilize resources. These were also the core contents discussed by domestic and international experts at the Workshop.

A highlight of the Workshop was the participation of international experts from enterprises operating in the fields of technology, energy, and sustainable development, bringing perspectives on development trends, application experiences of CCUS in the world, and deployment capabilities in Vietnam.

A representative of ISSPL Limited will present a paper titled "CCUS - Technology Overview, Applications, and Deployment Opportunities in Vietnam", introducing technological solutions, sectors with application potential, and necessary conditions for deploying CCUS.

Mr. Erskine Rozario, Technical and Construction Director of Z.E.G Technology, will share about "CO₂ and Hydrogen Production: Infrastructure and Industrial Applications". The presentation focuses on technological solutions, infrastructure requirements, and application prospects in industrial production.

The insights from international experts are expected to provide practical information and experience, giving Vietnam additional grounds to select appropriate technologies and promote cooperation and technology transfer in the field of CCUS.

From the domestic perspective, experts, managers, and enterprises will focus on analyzing the potential, conditions, and issues raised when deploying CCUS in Vietnam.

Mr. Luong Quang Huy, Head of the Greenhouse Gas Emission ManagementDivision, Department of Climate Change, will present the orientation for carbon emission management towards the Net Zero goal in Vietnam, mentioning requirements for managing and formulating policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Luong, senior expert of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute, will analyze the potential for developing CCS/CCUS in the oil and gas industry and offshore CO₂ storage. This is a field of interest as Vietnam has experience, geological data, and technical capacity from oil and gas exploration and exploitation activities.

Meanwhile, Mr. Le Van Nghi, Chairman and General Director of QIS Global, will share about building a Net Zero technology ecosystem in Vietnam, ranging from global technology access to domestic deployment capabilities.

The combination of international experience and analyses from Vietnam's practical situation is expected to help clarify opportunities, challenges, and necessary conditions for developing CCUS, especially in high-emission industries.

Another notable content was the panel discussion themed "Bringing CCS/CCUS Equipment and Technology into Practice in Vietnam: Opportunities, Challenges, and Deployment Roadmap".

The panel discussion was attended by representatives of the Department of Climate Change, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute, QIS Global, and Z.E.G Technology. The speakers discussed application potential, technical barriers, investment costs, infrastructure, policy mechanisms, as well as opportunities for cooperation and transfer of technology.

Through presentations and discussions, the workshop aims to connect regulatory agencies, scientists, and businesses, contributing to defining appropriate steps to bring CCUS technology from research and potential into practical application, serving the goals of emission reduction and green transition in Vietnam.
